Located in the Black Hills National Forest Wind Cave and Jewel Cave are enjoyable destinations in South Dakota. I visited both October 2002. Jewel Cave is 15 miles from Custer, South Dakota (on Route 16); 54 miles from Rapid City, South Dakota; 96 miles from Devils Tower and 118 miles from Badlands National Park.

With more than 127 miles surveyed, Jewel Cave is recognized as the third longest cave in the world.

The only way to see the cave is on guided tours provided by the Park Service. The Cave has been outfitted with steel walkways and staircases. Check the tour schedule to plan your day and reservation information. The two photos on this page are of Jewel Cave.
